‘It’s only normal to be a little nervous’, Star Shimmer thought to herself as she disembarked the train and took her first steps into Ponyville. She carried her modest luggage on her back, the rest of her possessions would be moved once she settled herself into her new home. It was all rather exiting actually, she’d never before left her home in Canterlot to travel to all the places beyond the safety of its walls. Her life had changed though since she’d discovered her special talent and for years she’d been struggling to reconcile it with her old place of residence. However, the bright lights of Canterlot were simply too bright for a pony to properly see the stars and she’d finally plucked up the courage to move to somewhere quieter where she could indulge in her favourite pastime, astronomy.
She stretched her wings out and brushed her blue-hued mane free of tangles as she watched the clouds drifting lazily by in the sky, ‘at least the weather looks nice here, that’s a good sign Star.’ As she navigated her way through the streets looking for her new lodgings she wondered what kinds of ponies she’d meet in this charming, rustic village. It was well known amongst all ponies that the new Princess, Twilight Sparkle was from these parts. Perhaps, if Star was honest with herself that small bit of information was the main reason she chose Ponyville to be her new home, after all, it would be thrilling to meet and perhaps even be able to discuss her research with a Princess!
Star Shimmer’s hooves clicked faintly as her beat a little faster as she fantasied receiving a compliment from a member of the royal line and accepting the position of being Twilight’s protégée. She had a giddy giggle on her lips as her daydream was abruptly interrupted as she accidentally bumped into another pony. “Oh! Pardon me, excuse me…” she blushed and backed up a few steps, embarrassed and flustered all at once. “..I should have been watching where I was going properly.”

Adrenaline was a great motivator. It dulled the ache of his tired muscles, cramped and sore from wearing his armor on the long train ride. It kept him sharp and alert, keeping the exhaustion at bay. It kept him focused. Of course, it was highly unlikely that the train would see any trouble on its trip from Canterlot to Ponyville, but Tuxedo Charmer knew that a good guard was always alert. Not that he was a palace guard, of course, or an official guard of any sort, but that was merely a matter of timing. After all, with a purpose like protecting people, how could he not be perfect for the royal guard? Yes, his body was more slender than most other guardsmen, and he was not as quick to get around, or as perceptive, but he was astute, a quick learner, and with a heart of gold always ready to lend a hand. What else could a guardsman need?
A job vacancy, apparently. Tuxedo had never imagined things could be this hard. It turned out that there was a lot more to getting into the Guard than he had ever imagined, and with a new Captain of the guard settling into his position, Tuxedo had almost no chance to work his way in and impress everyone. His trip to Ponyville was his big chance at a new start, a new town with new people. Perhaps here he could find a place where he was needed, and with the newly crowned Princess Twilight Sparkle living here, surely a new guard would be forming?
As the train pulled to a stop, he shifted faintly, settling his saddle bags differently on his aching back. Time to push all thoughts of nervousness and excitement aside, he had arrived. Patiently, he waited as the other ponies disembarked the train. Although his guard duty of the train was self appointed, it was one he took seriously, and would remain on board until everypony was safely disembarked. Finally, he trotted out onto the platform, and glanced around, taking in the sights of what would become his new home. It was quieter here, and while he had always been a quiet person, somehow he now missed the noisy throng of the capitol. With a shake of his head to dismiss such thoughts, he set off to make his way into town. He kept his eyes peeled for the house he would be living in, getting lost in the town, when the head of another pony butted against his side. He staggered, more in surprise than anything else, and his saddle bags fell to the ground, spilling papers, books and his scarf into the street.
"Are you alright?" he asked quickly, far more concerned about the other pony than his own meager possessions, as he turned to face the most beautiful Pegasus he had seen in his entire life.

Star Shimmer quickly forgot her fluster when she noticed the other pony dropping his things and being a helpful sort herself she swooped down and started diligently gathering them back up for him, "I'm fine, I am so sorry. Mother always did say I had my head in the clouds, which was funny seeing she was a pegasus as well." She chuckled softly as she gently tucked his scarf back into his saddlebag only vaguely admiring the colour, now was not the time for such trivial things. "Not that I ever spent much time in Cloudsdale in the first place. It was only during summer when flying camp was on, I'd go live with my Grandma Greystreak. I've spent most of my life living in Canterlot, maybe that's why I naturally just trot along instead of using my wings."
She smiled shyly, brushing back her full mane back off her muzzle and out of her eyes. Now that everything was finally righted once more she sat back on her haunches to properly inspect the stallion before her. Quickly noting the armor her smile turned shy, of course she's manage to bump into the first important pony she'd met and continued to talk, "My father was a unicorn, sometimes I used to imagine what it would be like if by some change I'd been born an Alicorn." She blushed, cringing faintly at the secret she'd just blurted out but quickly straighten her spine and moved on, "And now I am rambling, I'm not usually this talkative, it must be new home nerves. I've just moved here today and I guess I just got distracted. Are you a member of Princess Twilight Sparkles guard? I hope I am not keeping you from any important duty, I can be such a clutz but I guess a highly trained pony as yourself wouldn't know anything about that."
She laughed in a good-natured manner and then paused, her eyes widening faintly as she realised how rude she was being, "But where are my manners? I am Star Shimmer. I'll finally stop talking now you can get a word in."

Working together, the pegasus and unicorn had his possessions neatly stashed away once more. Her musical voice continued to sound out, and he listened intently as his horn began to shimmer, his saddle bags rising from the ground and settling across his back once more. It was nice to have someone to listen to, after having traveled so far, and once he heard that she was new to town as well, he realized that she too must have just disembarked from the same train as he. At her comment about being a guard, he opened his mouth to speak, but she had already carried on with her train of thought. He let his mouth close, and smiled gently, as he waited.
"Royal guard? Yes, that's why I'm here! I mean, no I am not a member, yet. I'm not even sure she has a guard yet, but..." He came to the realization that he was rambling as much as she had, and takes a quick moment to discretely clear his throat. As he did, he heard an odd gasp in the distance, but as he looked that way, all he saw was a pink, fluffy tail disappearing from sight. "What I mean to say is... It's nice to meet you, Star. I'm Tuxedo Charmer, and I'm new to town as well. I am hoping to get into Princess Twilight's royal guard as she is beginning to form it. I know I'm not exactly what people think of when they mention the words royal guard, but I... well, I can do whatever is needed of me." He nods quickly, assertively.
The silence that seemed to stretch after his little outburst was merely a moment, but to him it seemed a lifetime, so he blurted out the next thing he though of to cover the silence. "I could escort you to where you'd be staying, if you like? I have to make my way through town to head out to the room I'm renting in Sweet Apple Acres."

Star Shimmer looked the pony over as he spoke. Yes, he was of slimmer build then most of the guard ponies she’d seen. His armor sat on his body in a way that almost made it look like he’d perhaps borrowed it from an older brother or father but there was a look in his eye as he spoke which made her feel certain he’d achieve his dream one day. She smiled shyly again, moved by the passion and obvious commitment and immediately resolved to help him achieve his dream in any way she could.
She glanced to down the street as something pink caught her attention as well and raised a brow as a fluffy pony seemed to either remember something important or had some kind of seizure and ran off. She blinked a few times, torn somewhere between surprise and concern but then Tuxedo said something which distracted her from the thought.
“Sweet Apple Acres?” Her ears pricked up and she issued a short laugh of surprise, “Why, that’s where I am lodging myself! I wanted to be out of town a way so I could properly see the sky at night. I’m an astronomer, you see.” As she said this she pressed a hoof to her heart and straightened, clearly proud of her destiny. "Canterlot if just too bright too see the stars properly."
She stood once more, rearranging her bags and telescope and smiled, “However, I’d love to be escorted by you still, Tuxedo. It’s not often I get an offer like that from such a dedicated, strong pony. I feel safer and more at home already.” She batted her eyelashes and started on her way again, indeed feeling happier that she had met another pony who was in the same horseshoes as she.
